Top 5 Simple Ball Control Drills for Kids

Ball control is one of the most important foundations in football. The better a child can control the ball, the more confident and creative they will be in matches. The good news is that developing control doesn’t need expensive equipment or large spaces. Here are five simple drills children can practice anywhere — in the garden, on the driveway, or even indoors with a soft ball.

1. Inside Foot Taps

Place the ball in front of you and tap it gently back and forth using the inside of both feet. Start slowly, then increase the speed while keeping the ball under control. This builds coordination and helps players get comfortable using both feet.

2. Toe Touches

Stand with the ball in front and touch the top of the ball lightly with the sole of each foot, alternating left and right. Keep the rhythm steady. This exercise improves balance, rhythm, and comfort on the ball.

3. Wall Control

Find a safe wall and pass the ball against it. Try to control the ball with one touch before passing again. Vary the control — sometimes with the inside foot, outside foot, or even thigh. This drill develops first touch and reaction speed.

4. Cone Weaving

Set up cones or everyday objects in a line and dribble the ball through them using small, controlled touches. Encourage the use of both feet and different parts of the foot. This sharpens close control and agility.

5. Juggling Basics

Start by dropping the ball and kicking it once before catching it. Then try two touches, then three, gradually increasing. Juggling improves concentration, balance, and touch with different parts of the body.

These drills take only a few minutes each but make a huge difference when practiced regularly. By repeating them daily, children will notice their control improving — and with it, their confidence on the pitch.
